Vitamin F? What is it?
Discovered in 1929, Vitamin F is not your traditional vitamin, it is a vital group of essential nutrients required to give skin that youthful turgidity and bounce, among many other benefits. In the skincare universe, we refer to this group as Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). They are not manufactured by the body; they must come from outside sources such as diet or supplement.
Why are EFAs so vital to Age Management, Acne and all conditions of Dermatitis?
- Their metabolite’s “waterproof the skin,” maintaining the semi-impermeability barrier of the skin that keeps “bad things” out and nutrients in;
- They act as precursors to produce prostaglandins which regulate all cell functions;
- Their metabolites are also required for the structure of all cell membranes in the body; and
- Their metabolites regulate cholesterol transport and metabolism.
EFAs help to form a part of the dermal layers in the skin, as an essential ingredient called skin lipids, phospholipids also known as “polar lipids.” The variation of the intensity of lipids may change from the basal layer to the stratum corneum.
A good blend of EFAs works deep from within the epidermis supporting the skin to increase lipid levels by increased thickness, bounciness and fluid regulation.
Within the Blend
I have researched EFAs for several years to find a blend that would “mock” our skin’s matrix, which gets thinner with age and promotes loose and crepe-like skin, no matter how much topical care is given.
My first choice was Evening Primrose Oil, sourced from the volcanic soils in New Zealand valleys. Their content of Gamma-Linolenic (GLA-Omega 6), Linoleic Acid (Omega 6 EFA’s) and natural sourced vitamin E (Tocopherols), plus prostaglandins that can help regulate hormonal flux in menopausal women made it a natural choice.
Traveling to Inner Mongolia to visit an unbelievable laboratory that colleagues from China had recommended, I discovered a wild, indigenous Sea Buckthorn growing on the local steppes and harvested several times a year.
The research and development team were enthusiastic scientists who welcomed me with open arms, proud to show off all their discoveries to the American scientist who had come so far to visit them.
There was a rare bush bearing small red-gold berries surrounded by stones in front of the building that I had not seen before. To my habit, when confronted by something new I picked a leaf. I then rubbed it to smell and even tasted it—very bitter. The hosts looked on beaming and then informed me this was their #1 raw material—Sea Buckthorn. The essay sheet I requested listed nearly every nutrient needed by man to survive including, many anti-inflammatory ingredients. This was for me, natural addition to my Evening Primrose supplement.
Since then, we have learned Sea Buckthorn is farmed all over the world, but I insisted that we go through the enormous trouble of getting this wild raw material from Hohhot—Inner Mongolia.
Essential Fatty Acids and Skin
There is a long list of internal conditions that can benefit from a good blend of EFAs.
EFAs are especially recommended for:
- Eczema, Psoriasis, Dermatitis, Acne
- Aging, Dehydrated skin
- Inflamed reactive skin
- Helping to maintain water balance in the body
- Regulating all cell functions
- Improving the condition of hair, skin, and nails
- Addressing excessive water loss through the skin (TEWL)
I have often said that if all other supplements were removed from the market and only one was allowed, I would pick this EFA blend hands down.

DMK founder – Danné Montague-King
A pioneer in his industry. Danné has seen the depths of depression associated with poorly functioning skin. In fact, his everlasting passion was born from his dissatisfaction with his own acne as a teen. Many times he has shared the story of how his parents would take him to lavish events where he would find a dark corner to hide away in, ashamed of this blemished skin. Not understanding the condition completely, and after failed attempts from top U.S. dermatologists to cure his acne, Danné took things into his own hands, and, desperate for a cure, he became his own guinea pig. A string of breakthroughs, trials, tribulations, and many travels would follow, until he found his first true breakthrough in the 60s involving Vitamin C therapy.
That’s all it took to spark what would be decades of developing successful treatments and products that would combine to form the iconic brand that is DMK – sold throughout 30 countries. For 50 years, Danné has lived by his motto: rebuilding skin, rebuilding lives.
DMK Concept – Remove, Rebuild, Protect, Maintain
DMK believes that the origin of most skin conditions is a result of disharmony within the skin. Using the principles of biochemistry, DMK has formulated a range of treatments and products designed to educate skin to perform like youthful healthy skin. By matching formulations with the body’s chemistry, the skin is encouraged to respond in a positive manner.
